Meet Ms. Sonni McKinney

Welcome to First Grade! I am Sonni McKinney, and I am thrilled to be a part of the Marshall Academy faculty. Having walked these halls myself, it is a joy to return to the community that helped shape me and to now serve our youngest learners as they begin their own educational journeys.

My Background and Experience

I am a proud graduate of Marshall Academy, Class of 2020. My path to the classroom began at Northwest Community College in Oxford, where I earned my Associate’s degree in General Education. I then continued my studies at the University of Mississippi, where I received my Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education.

Before finding my home in the classroom, I gained diverse experience working as a file clerk at the Smith Whaley Law Firm and spent my college years working part-time at a local hair salon and a baby boutique. These roles taught me the importance of organization, communication, and care—skills I bring into my classroom every single day.

My Educational Vision

My goal is to create a classroom environment that feels like a family—one where every student feels supported, encouraged, and excited to learn. I believe that First Grade is a foundational year, and I strive to help my students reach their absolute highest potential while fostering a lifelong love for school.

My Life Outside of School

I am originally from Ingram’s Mill, MS, and I am very close with my family. I live right next door to my parents and enjoy spending time with my older brother and sister-in-law. My household is kept lively by my adopted cat, Socks!

When I’m not at school, I love:

• Family Time: Spending quality time with my friends and family.
• Shopping: Finding new treasures and staying busy in the community.
• Community: Being part of the local area I have called home for so long.
